*buntu SSD Tweaks

As you may’ve read, I hope to be upgrading soon to a KingSpec PATA SSD.  I was researching as to what tweaks are needed, even essential, under the Ubuntu OS.  The following is pretty much definitive:

  • Upgrade the kernel if running 10.04 LTS to support TRIM (PATA/IDE SSDs do not employ TRIM):

(You may need to temporarily enable backports via Software Sources for this.)

  • Configure Ext4 to Enable TRIM Support for (SATA) SSDs on *buntu:

  • And, finally, move your temp cache into RAM, (assuming you have enough RAM) by adding:
tmpfs /tmp tmpfs defaults,noatime,mode=1777 0 0
to end of fstab file.
